Week 1 - Europe

This week I thought that it would be good to study Europe as a whole so we can get the big picture before we dive into the smaller countries.

Here is the link for an overview of Europe:

Here are some more facts that I found interesting. I've also added a couple of ideas/suggestions at the end.

* Europe lies mainly in the temperate climate zones.
* The climate is milder in comparison to other areas of the same latitude around the globe due to the Gulf Stream – Europe’s “central heating". The Gulf Stream does not only carry warm the water to Europe's coast but also warms up the prevailing westerly winds that blow across the continent from the Atlantic Ocean.
* As a continent, the economy of Europe is currently the largest on Earth.
* As with other continents, Europe has a large variation of wealth between its 48 countries. The richer states tend to be in the West, some of the Eastern economies are still emerging from the collapse of the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia.
* The European Union, an intergovernmental body composed of 27 European states, comprises the largest single economic area in the world.
* Currently, 15 EU countries share the Euro as a common currency.
* Shall we mark the major geographic characteristics on our blank map (i.e. seas, mountain ranges, etc)?
* Does anyone want to attempt to memorize the names of the countries and their capitals? (It may be easier to do this by region – i.e. Northern Europe, Southern Europe, etc.)

Here are some basic facts about Europe that I found:

* Europe has 48 countries (27 are in the European Union)

* Second smallest continent in terms of area (3,930,000 square miles)

* Makes up roughly 2% of the earth's surface

* Third most populous continent behind Asia and Africa

* Has a population of about 710,000,000 people (about 11% of world’s population)
