Week 3 - Andorra

This week we'll be studying Andorra, a tiny country nestled in between Spain and France.

The capital of Andorra is Andorra la Vella.

Here are some sites about Andorra:

The national flag of Andorra was adopted in 1866.

The flag is a vertical tricolor of blue, yellow, and red with the coat of arms of Andorra in the center.

Although the three vertical bars may at first appear to be of equal width, the center yellow bar is slightly wider than the other two so that the ratio of bar widths is 8:9:8.

The design is based on the flags of France and Spain, the two states that protect the independence of the small state. The design of vertical bars is taken from the French tricolor, as is the blue and red. Yellow and red are taken from the Spanish flag.

The motto in the coat of arms in the middle stripe Virtus Unita Fortior means "Strength United is Stronger".

Here are things I thought were interesting:

* No income tax.

* Duty-free status (tourists don't pay taxes on what they buy).

* Interesting that the economy is strong when the government doesn't take much money from the people.

* More men than women. (Great place for single women...I guess...Ha Ha!)

* Interesting that the feudal system was in place until 1993. Until then, it was impoverished. Since becoming a parliamentary democracy, the economy has been growing.

* Main industry is tourism.

* Catalan is the official language. anyone, know what Catalan is? I think it's a Spanish dialect.

* 2.5 times the size of Washington D.C., in the Pyrenees Mountains.
