Week 2 - Albania

I thought this week we could study Albania (coordinates 41° 20′ 0″ N, 19° 48′ 0″ E.)

Albania's capital is Tirana.

Here are some sites on Albania:

On March 15, Albania was rocked by huge explosions.

The explosions occurred in an old arms dump near Tirana where some workers were dismantling surplus ammunition.

Albania has an excess of 100,000 tons of ammunition stored in army depots across the country.

No terrorist action is suspected, but it is still tragic as 16 people have been killed, 300 injured, and 10 still missing.

The blast was heard all the way in Macedonia, 100 miles away.

300 Surrounding buildings were destroyed and 4,000 people were evacuated from the nearby villages, fleeing from flying shrapnel.

Special army units in armored vehicles had to be deployed as ammunition continued to detonate for many hours after the initial blast.

Albania had to destroy these excess munitions in able to become a member of Nato.

The Albanian Defense Minister, Fatmir Mediu, has resigned “as an act of political responsibility”.

The village of Gerdec adjoining the base some six miles outside Tirana has been declared an emergency zone, and Prime Minister Sali Berisha has promised aid for those who have lost their homes.
